Year end summary of my 2018 adventures
Ski to Swede Ridge Shelter
Dec. 27, 2018 - Sara and I did some cross-country skiing to the Swede Ridge Shelter. This is a standard fun loop in the Bend, Oregon area for ski touring. Another perfect day of sun and snow.
First CC Ski of the Season
Dec. 1, 2018 - We just got the first dump of the season. So, we grabbed the Nordic skis and went up to the Swamp Sno-Park. Then we headed out to do the Nordeen loop that includes the Nordeen warming shelter. It was a great day with a mix of sunny skies and snow falling, and the weather was ideal for the new fluffy snow that fell and was falling.
Trail Run to Clouds Rest
October 8, 2018 - I did a trail run to the summit of Clouds Rest in Yosemite. This was yet another perfect day for adventure in Yosemite. Once I got on "the spine", I walked and picked my path deliberately. There were a couple of very exposed moves, but they were sure fun.
This was a 15 mile effort with about 3200 feet of elevation gain.
Climbing Mount Pugh
September 26, 2018 - Another perfect day for a fun scramble. I started early and climbed the 5300 feet and 11 mile round-trip mountain of Mount Pugh. I really did this pretty well. I got up and down quickly and felt good and right all day. Sweetness.
Climbing the Matterhorn
September 4, 2018 - I took the time to climb The Matterhorn in Oregon's The Wallowas. I did this as a dayhike from the trailhead for a round-trip of about 18 miles and 4300 feet of gain to the summit of this 9800 foot mountain. A beautiful day for a fun climb.
Backpacking Goat Rocks Wilderness Area
July 2018 - I did several section hikes of the PCT this year. One of the sections is a real favorite: the Goat Rocks Wilderness area.
Climb the Mt. Si Haystack Conditioning Hike
April 23, 2018 - Each year I add the Mt. Si Haystack to my conditioning hikes. It's a fun little scramble. I used my Vibram FiveFinger toe-shoes to climb it. I like the VFFs - they grip better than my climbing shoes on this kind of rocky surface.
Deschutes River Trail 50k
April 6, 2018 - Simply as a conditioning effort, I ran a 50K on the Deschutes River Trail. It was an out-and-back starting at the Entrada Lodge and going the entire length past Benham Falls and through to the Lava Lands Visitor Center.
I did well, and it was another great day for my 10 hour easy trail run - a lot of stops for viewing the river and rapids.
